Why do I have to pay to volunteer?
You are paying for the experience of a lifetime. You are also paying to cover the cost of your meals, accommodations, and other important logistical matters related to your stay, which would otherwise be an unduly burden on local communities. Part of your program cost also directly funds community projects.
What does the program fee cover?
We do not want cost to be a barrier to creating opportunities for worthwhile exchanges between people. Therefore, we are committed to maintaining a very low program fee. The program fee covers airport-pickup and drop-off, accommodations, and in country support. The program fee does not cover airfare, excursions and cultural activities not expressly listed in the program description.
Can I get a refund if I decide to cancel?
No. BT does not issue refunds for the program fee or for the deposit unless BT decides to cancel a trip. If you wish to cancel your trip for whatever reason after you have submitted a deposit or the full program fee, you will not be granted a refund. However, we will hold your deposit for up to 1 year. So you may choose another trip date during that time. Please read the terms and conditions carefully before submitting a deposit.
How long does the application process take?
The placement process takes 1-2 months. So volunteers are encouraged to apply early. It takes that long because volunteers must provide proof of evacuation insurance, a medical clearance letter and we must have enough time to evaluate your interests, background and partner needs at the time of your intended arrival.
What are the conditions like?
Conditions will vary based on season, country and assignment location. Accommodations are well maintained, clean, safe, and comfortable, though they will not be of the same level of comfort as in the United States and Europe. In Haiti, our guest center has running water, shared rooms with comfortable beds, electricity, modern toilets, and a rooftop garden with magnificent views of the city.
Will I be safe?
The safety and security of volunteers is our top priority and we go to great lengths to inform volunteers of potential dangers, and provide up to date health and safety information prior to a volunteer's arrival in country. When in country, volunteers are surrounded by a team that is well informed and integrated into the local community; and therefore, able to evaluate potential dangers and equipped to take the necessary steps to protect volunteers. Though no one can guarantee 100% security, we strive to ensure that you stay safe during your assignment and want to come back.
Do we volunteer in teams?
We offer individual volunteer placements year round. Volunteers work one on one with country partners and not in teams with other volunteers. This is why our model resembles a short term Peace Corps offering complete immersion. We do, however, have several options for groups. You can register for one of our cultural and insight trips (limited to 12 participants). We can help your group plan an Alternative Spring Break or a community service trip, if you number 6 or more.
Can we volunteer as a family?
We cannot yet accommodate volunteers who are under 18 years of age. Families can volunteer, but only if all members are over the age of 18.
I don't have much skills...can I still volunteer?
Yes. Anyone can volunteer. As long as you have a passion for doing good, there is an assignment for you. The only requirement is that you be 18 years or older, have at least a secondary school diploma, and be proficient in either English of French. Volunteer assignments are based on your experience, interests, and community need at the time of your arrival.
Is Beyond Travel a religious organization?
No. Beyond Travel is not a religious organization. However, some of our partner organizations do have religious affiliations. Nonetheless, the work or assignment of our volunteers will never have any proselytizing or religious aspect.
What is your commitment to diversity?
We are committed to diversity and welcome volunteers of any background, faith, nationality, ethnic origin, and orientation.
Can BT help me fundraise for my trip?
Yes. Our participation, however, in planning your fundraising activities is limited to only offering advice, tips and links to resources.
Can I bring Gifts for the Community?
Yes. But your gift must comply with our gifts and donations policy.
